Your Task: In your car groups you will read, analyze and evaluate sources in order to answer the following question:
“Did the South have the right to secede from the Union?”
(A) You will move from station to station every 8 minutes. While at your stations you will read the excerpts and answer the guiding questions. You will be looking at excerpts from the following sources: [ONLINE TIMER]
(B) After your group has visited all three stations, together you and your group members will complete the evaluating the secession argument graphic organizer. You will have 10 minutes.
(C) When steps A and B are complete you will have 10 minutes to individually complete the following:
- The Declaration of Independence
- The Constitution of the United States
- The Ordinances of Secession of South Carolina
(B) After your group has visited all three stations, together you and your group members will complete the evaluating the secession argument graphic organizer. You will have 10 minutes.
(C) When steps A and B are complete you will have 10 minutes to individually complete the following:
- Based on the evidence, did the South have the right to secede from the Union? State your interpretation and give evidence from the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution and the Ordinances of Secession of South Carolina to support your interpretation. You should have two – three pieces of evidence to support your conclusion.
- Many Southerners claimed that the right to secede was part of the American definition of freedom. Do you agree? Why or Why not? Give at least one piece of evidence to support your interpretation.
